The history of Stapleford

This website is about the people of Stapleford over the centuries and the events that affected their lives.

There have been a number of  books written about the history of Stapleford but pre-eminent is Ralph Penniston Taylor’s second ‘History of Stapleford.’ With the approval of his executors this has been transcribed and reproduced in the ‘Histories’ section of this website. This forms the basis of the medieval history of Stapleford and rarely needs to be added to or amended.

Ralph loved this period of  history  but his interest waned the closer he got to the modern day, and he was quite rude about later developments. Recognising that we are standing on the shoulders of giants, most of the other material on this site covers a period starting around the middle of the nineteenth century to the present day. It is still being developed and items are added at regular intervals.
